Siti Muharam is the golden voice of Taarab Jazz from the island archipelago of Zanzibar. Siti means lady and Muharam’s Great-Grandmother, Siti Binti Saad was the first lady of Taarab. Binti Saad took the formal music of the Omani Sultanate to the street. In 1890 Siti Binti Saad was born to freed slaves in the small fishing village of Fumba on the main island of Zanzibar, Unguja. Her trail blazing rise to super stardom along the Swahili coast of East Africa revolutionised the musical form of Taarab. She was the first female to sing publicly and also the first to sing Swahili lyrics. Siti Muharam is the contemporary force representing her Great-Grand mothers remarkable legacy with her own golden voice.

In February 2018 Producer Sam Jones went to Zanzibar with OtC boss Pete OntheCorner to reimagine the legacy of Siti Binti Saad. The project’s Music Director, Issa Matona, Muharam and students of the Dhow Countries Music Academy were led by Sam Jones over long days in the studio. Together they located a Taarab that channelled the percussive street sounds and poetic context that Binti Saad first pioneered 90 years ago.

The coming together of these four musical virtuosos through poetry, song, instrumentation and production has projected Taarab into the future of jazz. Rising from the exoticism Zanzibar effortlessly stirs and the Arabic scales and Swahili culture Binti Saad revolutionised, Muharam, Jones and Matona summoned a rebirth for Taarab and Binti Saad. The pulse and swing of the chaotic alleyways of Stonetown, the beating heart of Swahili culture in East Africa and the dreams of justice, love and tradition imbued in the visionary life of a true innovator and singular musical talent.

‘Again’ is the first single from Tenesha The Wordsmith's debut album, 'The Collection’ and features Tamar Collocutor. The album has been produced by Khalab whose ‘Album of The Year’ 'Black Noise 2084’ featured Tenesha’s work ‘Black Noise’. The Collection' is a powerful spoken word album that lays difficult truths bare and a projects the stories of hidden voices. Tenesha is an artist and educator from Oakland California. On the Corner is strengthened by her work and are proud be collaborating with her. A UK and EU tour is planned for mid-summer to coincide with ‘The Collections’ release.

Before both these album’s drop in the spring/summer of 2019 we're releasing these bonus track, featuring Tamar Collocutor as part of OntheCorner's celebration of the International Women pushing the label and it's art forwards.
